Located over 800 km north of Perth at the most westerly part of the Australian continent, Shark Bay, Australia's largest bay and one of the country's most significant historic sites and tourist destinations. Here, in this breathtaking, starkly beautiful region labelled as the Gascoyne region, you can come into contact with a dramatic landscape, probably much unchanged, from 400 years ago when and where the Dutch found the Australian coastline in 1616.
Livelihoods have changed over the last 170 years when guano mining became the first industry and was soon exhausted when the cormorants couldn't produce fast enough to keep up with the miners. Guano mining was replaced by pearl shell gathering and fishing. Then with the opening of the state northwards came the sheep. Today the sheep have been replaced by tourism which has overtaken, but works alongside, fishing and pearling.
Just as industry is focussed around the sea, so are the majority of natural features that lead to the Gascoyne region being acknowledged as arguably Australia's number one tourism destination as one of the 16 iconic destinations that comprise Australia's National Landscapes.
The area is blessed with a Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and warm, moist winters. 320 days of clear blue skies brings only 200mm of rainfall. The bright, vivid contrasts of blue sky, aqua sea, white beaches and red dunes are a stunning WOW factor. 1500kms of beautiful, deserted beaches, free from stingers and crocodiles. Excellent fishing (both deep sea and shoreline), bushwalk your legs off, camp under a black sky littered with flashing diamonds in the blazing Milky Way. Maybe you'd prefer the night sky from the lightless artesian hot tub at the old Peron Station Homestead.
See the sights with a creature cruise, scenic flight or offroad in a 4WD.
Actually one of Western Australia's most famous natural tourist attraction's - the friendly dolphins of Monkey Mia - is only the beginning.
Spend an absolute minimum of 3 nights, 4 nights would remove the potential rush factor.
